ForesightXL: Context-Driven Forecasting
Brydens BI helps finance teams improve reporting, consolidation, planning, and forecasting. Over time, we have built everything from driver-based forecasts and 3-way models to bespoke finance automation solutions. One challenge has appeared repeatedly: incorporating real business context into forecasting in a way that remains structured, explainable, and decision-ready.
It is a challenge I became acutely aware of during my time as a CEO and through several M&A transactions. Detailed forecast models were important, but often disconnected from the discussions that mattered most: what might happen next, what it could mean, and how the business should respond.
That is what led us to ForesightXL: an Excel-based forecasting assistant designed to help finance professionals turn existing data and plain English business context into clear, explainable forecasts.
ForesightXL is an AI forecasting add-in for Excel designed for finance teams that want faster, more explainable forecasting without implementing a new planning platform. It combines historical financial data with natural language business context, such as assumptions, known events, and meeting notes, to support context-driven forecasting in a practical Excel-based workflow.
ForesightXL is an official Microsoft AI partner. The ForesightXL Add-in is available via the Microsoft App Store.
ForesightXL works directly within Excel.
No new systems. No data migration. No black-box outputs.
Users select their historical data, define a forecast horizon, and add plain-English context, such as assumptions, known events, or meeting notes. ForesightXL generates forecast numbers with structured explanations covering trends, seasonality, one-offs, constraints, and assumptions.
It is designed to help finance teams make forecasts easier to understand, challenge, and defend.
Who is ForesightXL for?
ForesightXL is designed for CFOs, FP&A teams, finance managers, and analysts who want to adopt or add context-driven forecasting without introducing another major system. It is especially relevant for teams that work heavily in Excel or want a practical, low-risk first step into AI-assisted finance, with forecasts that remain explainable, transparent, and easy to review.
Does it work with Calumo?
ForesightXL works within Excel, so it can use live Calumo-linked data and commentary, and its outputs can be written back where required. It can also work alongside other tools that link to Excel or support simple data import. For larger-scale forecasting needs, Brydens BI can also design broader solutions beyond the add-in.
ForesightXL was designed around three principles: simplicity, ease of use, and structure. ForesightXL does not replace judgment or existing forecasting processes. It helps teams forecast faster, with more structure, transparency, and context.
There are still important questions to ask. Here are five of them.
1. “Is this a black box?”
No.
ForesightXL structures forecasts into transparent components (trend, seasonality, assumptions, constraints, one-offs) so the logic is explicit and reviewable. It supports judgment rather than replacing it, and it is simple to use.
2. “Does this mean another system to implement?”
No new platform required.
ForesightXL runs inside Excel. There is no ERP replacement, no data warehouse dependency, and no major implementation project. In many cases, teams can install the add-in and begin using it quickly within their existing Excel environment.
3. “What about data security?”
You remain in control.
ForesightXL operates within your existing Excel environment and governance framework.
No data, financial figures, or spreadsheet contents processed by ForesightXL are transmitted to ForesightXL-managed databases.
Full details are available in the ForesightXL Privacy Policy.
4. “Will this reduce finance’s control over forecasting?”
It strengthens control.
ForesightXL makes assumptions explicit and structured, improving auditability and enabling clearer review discussions with executives, auditors, and boards.
Forecasting remains fast, secure, and easy to review because it happens within your Excel file.
5. “Is this just AI hype?”
It is a practical productivity tool.
ForesightXL accelerates the drafting and structuring of forecasts while retaining finance oversight. It is designed to improve speed, clarity, and defensibility. The real value lies in incorporating plain English business context into the forecasting process. We have already applied ForesightXL to internal forecasting use cases, including Brydens BI chargeable-hours forecasting. See the example here.
